Rail freight from Baku

The middle option — cheaper than air, faster than sea, and on the routes Azerbaijan sits directly on, the most sensible of the three.

  • Container & wagon
  • Fixed schedule
  • Multimodal link
A freight train with container wagons

Azerbaijan is on the Trans-Caspian corridor, and that is not a slogan but the reason rail freight from Baku is worth considering seriously. Where a route runs east to Central Asia and China, or west through Georgia and Turkey by the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line, rail typically beats road on price and sea on time.

Rail is also the steadiest mode. It does not queue at road borders, it does not depend on weather the way sea does, and its schedule is a schedule rather than an estimate. For regular consignments along the same route, that predictability is often worth more than a small saving elsewhere.

We arrange both container shipments and full wagons, choosing by volume, by what is being carried and by whether the route has a suitable terminal at the destination end.

What's included

  • Container and wagon shipments
  • Station and routing selection
  • Loading and transshipment coordination
  • Combined with road delivery

How it works

  1. Route and rolling stock

Container, covered wagon or open wagon, chosen by cargo and route. We check terminals and transhipment points at both ends before quoting anything.

  2. Packing and securing for rail

Rail has its own securing standards. Shunting produces sharp longitudinal impacts that road transport does not, and cargo secured for a truck can be damaged by them.

  3. Documents and customs

Rail consignment note, declaration, invoices, certificates. For transit routes, the paperwork of every country the shipment passes through.

  4. Tracking and final delivery

Status along the route, and delivery from the destination terminal to the recipient's address by road.

What affects the price

Container or full wagon

Below a wagon's volume, a container is cheaper. Above it, a wagon usually wins. The break-even depends on the route as much as on the volume.

Route and transit countries

Every border on a rail route means paperwork and, on some corridors, a change of gauge with transhipment. Both cost time and money and both are predictable in advance.

Volume and weight

Rail is generous with weight and stricter with dimensions than road. Heavy dense cargo is where rail is at its most competitive.

Delivery at the ends

Rail runs terminal to terminal. Collection from the sender and delivery to the recipient are road legs and are priced as such.

Questions about this service

How long does rail freight from Baku to China take?

Along the Trans-Caspian corridor, typically two to four weeks depending on the destination, the border crossings and transhipment. Faster than sea, considerably cheaper than air.

Is rail suitable for household goods?

For long routes to Central Asia and China, yes. For shorter regional distances, road is normally simpler and cheaper because it avoids the terminal legs at both ends.

What is the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line and does it help me?

It is the rail link running west from Azerbaijan through Georgia into Turkey. For cargo heading to Turkey or onward to Europe it is a real alternative to road, particularly when road borders are congested.

Who handles transhipment when the gauge changes?

We do. On corridors where the track gauge changes, cargo is transferred at the border terminal — that is planned into the route and the price from the outset, not discovered halfway.
